For the first time, Wikirate has published a benchmark from the World Benchmarking Alliance on our platform, highlighting the importance of company impacts on our planet. You can explore the Nature Benchmark with over 130k datapoints from over 760 companies, everything from the top-level ranking, all the way down to the underlying data on our Open Data platform Wikirate.org.

The Nature Benchmark measures and ranks the world’s most influential companies on their efforts to protect our environment and its biodiversity. It tracks and measures how companies are reducing their negative impacts on nature, and contributing to the protection and restoration of ecosystems, aligned with the goals of the Global Biodiversity Framework.

2023 edition key findings:

  • Despite Food and Agriculture companies being among the most nature-dependent industries, 0% holistically address their dependencies on nature.
  • Only 6% of companies have a time-bound target to eliminate deforestation.
  • Less than 2% of the companies assessed, commit to respecting local communities’ environmental rights. Similarly, only 12% of companies pledge to respect the right to access to water, sanitation, and hygiene, which is crucial to people’s well-being and dignity.
  • Around 30% of companies are reporting water use reductions or disclosing water usage from water-stressed areas, suggesting a growing awareness of their role in ensuring water availability worldwide.
  • Only 12% of companies are reporting metrics on discharged pollutants, and just 2% have set targets to reduce them.
  • While 63% of food companies assign sustainability oversight to their boards, only 1% of companies have Boards that can demonstrate they have the relevant expertise on topics like biodiversity or climate. Only 28% of food companies consistently report on how they are meeting the targets they set
