We are thrilled to announce that WikiRate has been awarded the Thomson Reuters Foundation Stop Slavery Innovation Award 2021. Across eight categories, the Stop Slavery Award recognises NGOs, the public sector, grassroots organizations, journalists and businesses for their work in combating modern slavery around the world.

We were nominated for our work to unlock the potential of labor rights and modern slavery data through the WikiRate open data repository and our data collection, analysis and dissemination tools.

As part of this work we joined forces in 2016 with Walk Free to launch the Modern Slavery Act Research Project — an effort to track how companies are responding to modern slavery legislation such as the UK Act. Since last year, the project has been expanded through a collaboration with The Future Society to develop AI tools to analyse corporate statements. A new modern slavery dashboard will be released on the 18th of March with the latest analysis looking at the modern slavery commitments, policies and due diligence of asset managers from the financial sector.

In 2020, Clean Clothes Campaign launched the Fashion Checker — a consumer campaigning tool powered by WikiRate that brings together data from brands, their supply chain relations and workers to highlight the gap between the commitments brands make on supply chain wages and the actual wages paid. The aim is to advance living wage commitments from brands and ensure that workers can support themselves and their families. The website will be updated annually with a new edition to be launched in summer 2021.

It is an honor to have been shortlisted for this year’s award alongside initiatives doing stellar work to tackle modern slavery such as the Global Fund to End Modern Slavery and Fifty Eight. A huge thank you goes out to the Thomson Reuters Foundation and to our partners, in particular the Walk Free Initiative, The Future Society and Clean Clothes Campaign. We look forward to continuing this important work to open up actionable data on modern slavery and labor conditions around the world.

The winners were announced at the Thomson Reuters Foundation Stop Slavery Award 2021 ceremony, which took place on the 25th of February.
